For Jodi Mason, Principal Designer and Owner of Urbanhome Interior Design, home has always been more than just four walls. It’s a feeling. A reflection of who you are, how you live, and the moments that matter most. When the time came for Jodi to create her own personal retreat on the shores of Lake St. Clair in Belle River, she approached the project with the same philosophy she brings to every client: meaningful interiors, thoughtfully designed for real life.
Recently featured in ourhomes magazine, Jodi’s lakehouse is a masterclass in small space design, clever storage solutions, and timeless style. Today, we’re giving you an inside look at how she transformed this once-seasonal cottage into a serene, soulful, and smart full-time home.
Downsizing with Heart
"I wanted it to feel like the kind of place where I could wake up every morning to an amazing view of the water, but also have the comforts of home in a well-designed, livable space," says Jodi. "I call it my tree fort. It's small, but it makes me happy."
Design Highlights
Living Room
A soft boucle sectional, layered rugs, and a sculptural petrified wood coffee table create an atmosphere that’s both cozy and elevated. The ceiling beams and old-world stone fireplace nod to Jodi’s inspiration—the charming stone architecture of Old Montreal.
Kitchen
Cleverly optimized with custom cabinetry by Mastro Kitchens and an old-world stone backsplash, the kitchen balances warmth and efficiency. Open shelving and brass accents add charm and utility.
Tequila Room
A moody lounge space designed for relaxing and entertaining, featuring a bar nook, dark shiplap, and layered textures that feel both luxurious and fun.
Outdoor Living
The dock, deck, and front porch were designed as true extensions of the living space. “I wanted to live outside as much as inside,” Jodi shares. “It’s where I start and end most days.”
Design Takeaways for Your Own Home
Whether you’re planning a downsize or simply want to create a more meaningful interior, Jodi’s lakehouse offers lessons for everyone:
- Maximize Every Inch: Thoughtful space planning makes small spaces feel larger and more functional.
- Layer with Intention: Combining textures, natural materials, and curated accessories adds warmth and personality.
- Create Lifestyle Spaces: Design for how you actually live, not just how a room “should” look.

Final Thoughts:
Jodi’s lakehouse is more than a beautiful space—it’s a story of reinvention, resilience, and the joy of designing a home that truly reflects who you are. It’s proof that great design isn’t about size. It’s about soul.
